That may have been true in the spring and fall, but her hours would not have been adjusted in the winter and summer to account for the later and earlier sunrises. In a poetic sense, the book is saying she arrived to work around sunset and was let off of work as the sun was coming up. Depending on a city's latitude, the difference between when the sun sets in the summer and winter can be as much as four or five hours. Her work hours weren't really tied to the sun's rising and setting. Last, the etymology of a word or phrase can often only be answered on a case-by-case basis, and, many times, it's simply a matter of speculation why things came to be the way they ended up.įirst, the sentence is an idiomatic way to say that she was working a long night shift. (And note that the difference between, for instance, sun down, sun-down, and sundown is just a matter of what dictionary you use and what style you follow.) But, in this case, I was able to address the specific example sentences by referring to a dictionary. This is why there are such things as style guides. When it comes to making things up so as to describe them in ways that haven't been defined yet, it's a matter of personal opinion, based on whatever conventions you follow that would seem to make the most sense to people in general. I mentioned this in another post but felt it deserved its own topic.įor those who don't know Ultraviolet is a service that provides digital copies to supplement films bought on Dvd's, Blu-rays, and Ultra HD Blu-rays.The listing, Hangover Part II ULTRAVIOLET Digital Code has ended. I believe also that Ultraviolet extends to some films/tv primarily bought digitally as well, which means that you can your access your digital Ultraviolet collect on any streaming service that supports Ultraviolet (providing its in their catalogue). A good idea which gives consumers the confidence to buy a disc and know they'll be able to access it in digital form on their devices. It also gives confidence to consumers that their digital Ultraviolet collection can be accessed on potentially more then one streaming service.a good back up if for what ever reason the streaming service your using becomes inaccessible. The problem is the two major backers (TalkTalk TV Store, and Rakuten) of Ultraviolet in the UK have dropped the service, making it almost redundant. Flixster remains, but i believe even that has closed in the US, which makes you wonder how long before it also closes in the UK? #FLIXSTER REDEEM CODES TV# I'm guessing the financial model that Ultraviolet used in the UK was not successful. To be a useful Ultraviolet really needs to be supported by big hitters like Amazon, iTunes, or Googleplay. If you buy a dvd or blu-ray most of the new titles promote their digital copies on the front cover, its hard not to miss the branding. I wonder if its going to stay, or is the service finished in the UK? Which makes it very odd that its so badly supported now in the UK. The film studios have obviously invested a lot in Ultraviolet. I am sure that there were sound financial reasons for TalkTalk and Rakuten to drop UV support. However for me it was always UV that made them a credible alternative to Amazon or Google for streaming. Rakuten aren't small fry, I believe, but how important a market is the UK for them? As for TalkTalk, well. Flixster Video has shut down its operations in the U.S. Since they dropped UV I don't think I've purchased a single title from TalkTalk as their prices are no different to Amazon or Google. and no longer supports redemption of digital codes or playback of videos in the U.S. However, former Flixster Video customers will still be able to watch all of the videos in their collection and redeem digital codes through Vudu. Only their tendency to aggressively price a new release at a more reasonable price for a short period has made me purchase from Rakuten. Both are going to look ridiculously exposed if they end up against a Movies Anywhere featuring Disney, Amazon, Apple and Google and also making available the UV content purchased from Rakuten and TalkTalk in the first place. BogoMips - which computes loops_per_jiffy.It has also more informally been defined as "one light-foot", which is equal to approximately one nanosecond. One fermi is 10 −15 m, so a jiffy is about 3 × 10 −24 seconds. Harrison, the time it takes for light to travel one fermi, which is approximately the size of a nucleon. In astrophysics and quantum physics a jiffy is, as defined by Edward R. The speed of light in a vacuum provides a convenient universal relationship between distance and time, so in physics (particularly in quantum physics) and often in chemistry, a jiffy is defined as the time taken for light to travel some specified distance. GIF images (each frame having an individually defined display time measured in 1/100 s). FLI sequences (one global frame frequency setting) and animated Compuserve. The term "jiffy" is sometimes used in computer animation as a method of defining playback rate, with the delay interval between individual frames specified in 1/100 of a second (10 ms) jiffies, particularly in Autodesk Animator. Stratus also defines the microJiffy, being 1/65,536 of a regular Jiffy. Stratus VOS (Virtual Operating System) uses a jiffy of 1/65,536 second to express date and time (number of jiffies elapsed since 1 January 1980 00:00 Greenwich Mean Time). Jiffy values for various Linux versions and platforms have typically varied between about 1 ms and 10 ms, with 10 ms (1/100 s) reported as an increasingly common standard in the Jargon File. A timer in the computer creates the 60 Hz rate, causing an interrupt service routine to execute every 1/60 second, which increments a 24-bit jiffy counter, scans the keyboard, and some other housekeeping too. ġ980s 8-bit Commodore computers, such as the C64 and C128, had a jiffy of 1/60 second, which was not dependent on the mains AC or video vertical refresh rate. Many older game consoles (which use televisions as a display device) commonly synchronize the system interrupt timer with the vertical frequency of the local television standard, either 59.94 Hz with NTSC systems, or 50.0 Hz (20 ms) with most PAL systems. It is not an absolute time interval unit, since its duration depends on the clock interrupt frequency of the particular hardware platform. In computing, a jiffy was originally the time between two ticks of the system timer interrupt. In electronics, a jiffy is the period of an alternating current power cycle, 1/60 or 1/50 of a second in most mains power supplies. It has since been redefined for different measurements depending on the field of study. He proposed in 1926 a unit of time called the "jiffy" which was equal to the time it takes light to travel one centimeter in a vacuum (approximately 33.3564 picoseconds). The earliest technical usage for jiffy was defined by Gilbert Newton Lewis (1875–1946). ('Gliff' or 'gliss' for 'a transient view' was also found in older English poetry as early as 1738. (compare: 'in the blink of an eye') and may ultimately derive from Gothic or Teutonic words for 'shine'. It was common in a number of Scots English dialects and in John Jamieson's Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language (1808) it is suggested that it is a corruption of ' gliff' (glimpse) or 'gliffin' (glance) First attested in 1780, the word's origin is unclear, though one suggestion is that it was thieves' cant for lightning. From this, it has acquired a number of more precise applications as the name of multiple units of measurement, each used to express or measure very brief durations of time. Jiffy can be an informal term for any unspecified short period, as in "I will be back in a jiffy". Carter’s favorite high-intensity exercises is a squat to an overhead dumbbell press, which involves holding dumbbells at your shoulders when you descend into the squat, then pressing the dumbbells overhead as you stand. Repeat this routine until the 20 minutes are up. Set a timer for 20 minutes and try doing 15 goblet squats, 15 kettlebell or dumbbell swings and five minutes of running on the treadmill (or around the block) at a moderate pace. You can change the body weight squats to goblet squats, holding a kettlebell or dumbbell in both hands at chest level as you squat. Howell suggested throwing them into the mix. If you have access to a dumbbell or kettlebell, Mr. Howell said, you can ramp up the intensity by trying 10 squats, 10 push-ups and a 60-second plank - repeated 10 times. You can modify the plank by putting your knees on the floor or doing a standing plank by placing your forearms on the wall. If you can’t do a push-up on the floor, do it against a countertop or a stable bench. The workout is: Five body weight squats, five push-ups and a 30-second plank - repeated six times, resting for no more than 30 seconds between rounds. Howell’s favorite full-body, no-equipment, time-efficient workouts is simple and can be scaled to any fitness level or ability. Repeat this movement about 15 times, until your body starts to feel looser, then move onto some jumping jacks and high knees, where you bring your knees up to your chest one at a time, either by marching or running in place. He likes to do the cat-cow yoga pose, where you start on all fours and arch your back and look up at the ceiling, then round your back, dropping your head between your shoulders. I just want to start moving, and I’m a big fan of raising your body temperature before a workout,” Mr. He recommended a three- to five-minute warm-up with the goal of increasing your circulation. “That means that you’re going to have to to take the warm-up seriously.” “You don’t want to spend 15 minutes warming up,” Dr. But for a 20-minute workout, your warm-up will have to be efficient. Howell said that it’s essential to start with a warm-up and end with a cool down. “I don’t need you to go faster, just don’t slow down,” Mr. While you don’t want to rush through an exercise and risk poor form, you also don’t want to stop moving and take a five-minute break in the middle of your workout. In addition to compound movements, the other secret to making a short workout effective is minimizing rest time between exercise reps and when transitioning between movements, Mr. Carter said, including a decreased heart rate (a sign of a healthy heart) and lower blood pressure. Taxing your heart like this two or three times a week can bring a host of cardiovascular benefits, Dr. Carter said, which ultimately raises your heart rate. When you use multiple muscle groups, your body shunts blood away from organs to the working muscles, Dr. If you’re short on time, “you want big movements that use big muscles,” Mr. Isolation exercises, like bicep curls or calf raises, won’t raise your heart rate as quickly as compound exercises and primarily work one muscle group at a time. Maillard Howell, head of fitness at Reebok and co-owner of Dean CrossFit in Brooklyn, said the key to getting an effective workout in a short amount of time is focusing on compound exercises.Ī compound exercise is one that uses multiple muscle groups at the same time to perform a movement - like squats, push-ups or deadlifts. How can you get an effective workout in 20 minutes? “People really can glean a lot of favorable benefits in a short amount of time,” Dr. Carter, a cardiovascular physiologist at the Indiana University Bloomington School of Public Health, said that shorter, more intense workouts are better than longer, less intense workouts at lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease and reducing overall mortality rates. Experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that most adults get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week, but you can cut that in half, to 75 minutes a week, if the workout is intense. Rather than physically pressing buttons, you would receive a haptic response from Apple’s Taptic Engines. Rotar also believes Apple will change the mute switch “to a singular press button, rather than the up and down switch that we have now.” Both of these potential changes do line up with rumors of Apple adopting solid-state buttons on upcoming iPhone models. If these leaked materials are legitimate, then it seems likely that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature a unified volume rocker, while the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will retain the familiar two-button layout. Meanwhile, the CAD drawings for the base model iPhone 15 feature two slots for volume buttons with four pins in all. The iPhone 15 Pro CAD only shows 2 pins on a longer volume button. While making our iPhone 15 Pro Concept, we’ve found that Apple uses 2 pins on each of the 2 volume buttons. Almost 100% sure that the iPhone 15 Pro will LONG Unified Volume button, rather than 2 separate ones. We continue to uphold the same standard business casual dress code policy for dinner service across all our fine-dining properties to ensure the best experience for all our guests. The response ignored several questions about the public’s response to the dress code and if ownership was worried about any implications of racism. Steak 48 submitted a statement to Eater - the same one it sent out to multiple media outlets. “So if Steak 48 is going to charge $100 per person, then does this mean they will be raising wages the employees too?” one Twitter user wrote. Better pay would help soothe those frustrations, but some are skeptical that Steak 48’s $100-minimum mandate would benefit its service workers. Many restaurant employees feel overworked with additional responsibilities staffing shortages are prevalent in the industry. In many ways, the discussion from five years ago mirrors the online chatter surrounding Steak 48’s policy.Ĭonversations circling on private service worker groups on Facebook indicate that some industry members feel they would benefit from the policy, as minimum gratuity would make working during a pandemic sustainable. The system, introduced in 2014, was developed as a way to eliminate costly no-shows, but some customers raised concerns about having to pay for their meals upfront. The $100 restriction is similar to prepaying for a meal, something popularized by Tock, the reservation portal co-founded by Alinea co-founder Nick Kokonas. Steak 48 opened its Chicago location in 2017, where it serves wet-aged steaks that range from $46 to $74 a la carte. A few diners weren’t put off by the restrictions, however, saying that some customers may find the rules helpful after a long pandemic year of not dining out in public. The $100 minimum felt especially vexing for diners venturing from their homes to visit restaurants - some for the first time - as COVID-19 positivity rates drop and vaccines continue to be more widely available. Several of the restaurant’s regulars tell Eater Chicago that they feel as if management was betraying their loyalty by imposing arbitrary restrictions. The Steak 48 discussion didn’t just center on racism. Earlier this week, NBA legend Dominique Wilkins tweeted about alleged racist practices at a French restaurant in suburban Atlanta. Most recently, now-shuttered bar/restaurant Bottled Blonde went under the microscope four years ago for its policies in River North. Social media debate honed in on over whether the dress code was really an anti-Black dogwhistle, a practice that has plagued restaurants and bars for years. Please note, Management reserves the right to change and / or update the Dress Code at any time. Footwear is required but there are no restrictions on the type of footwear worn.Clothing emitting offensive odors such as excessive perfume, cologne, tobacco, and or marijuana odors. Any clothing with language or graphics that are vulgar or sexually explicit.Any clothing that is excessively revealing and shows a overly bare midriff or excessive cleavage.Bustier tops, corset tops, bandeaux tops, or tube tops unless each is worn under a waist-length jacket.Sweatshirts or t-shirts with large images, screen printing or large logos, large writing or characters.Exception: Sweatshirts without a hood and that only contain one small logo are allowed.Exception: Non-athletic material shorts are allowed for men and women and must come down to mid-thigh or have at least a 5-inch leg.Exception: Dri fit, “Polo style” shirts with a collar are allowed.Sweat suits or workout attire which includes: running/ gym shorts, sports bras, heavy weighted, hooded sweatshirts, or yoga/workout pants. The dress code became a trending topic this week on Twitter. Other Steak 48 locations include Charlotte and Houston the company also runs Steak 44 in Phoenix. Steak 48’s reason for the $100 minimum is “to ensure that each guest enjoys the total experience of food, service, and atmosphere.” Meanwhile, new dress codes were implemented at all Steak 48 restaurants, but the Chicago and Philadelphia outlets were the most detailed. Beyond clothing, Steak 48 has also stipulated a $100 per person minimum and an 18 percent automatic tip for parties of five or more people at its Chicago and Philadelphia locations. And that’s what Steak 48 provided this week when social media lit up about the steakhouse’s new, very detailed dress code that includes restrictions on wearing corsets, baseball caps for women, bandanas, and more than a dozen more rules. One sign that restaurants are approaching some sort of normalcy is the return of a good, old-fashioned controversy surrounding a dining room’s dress code. |
